Impressions made upon a child are, for better or worse, long lasting. In the case of these musical vignettes the impressions were made decades ago ( to the early and mid 60's, as the title may imply). I was born in Toronto - on the lower east side, if you will - and spent a lot of time on the streets named above.
I have indelible memories of places along the streets, the streets themselves and people on the streets. Men in grey trousers and overcoat. White shirt and tie. Fedora. And a cigarette. Women in dresses nylons heels. Hats.Broach. And a cigarette. There was no colour. Everything was a grey. The exception was the air in diners and restaurants. The air was cigarette smoke blue. It drifted in a haze and settled on us and in us. The smells in those memories were of smoke liquor and grease.

Musically, this project was informed by jazz although it is not jazz. It was formed by notions of 20th century classical although it is not classical. Too, I felt the presence of music such as Petula Clark's 'Downtown' and others.
These constitute a memoir of a kind, of both music in grey smoky suits and the grit grime and noise of street life.
It is also a postcard from back when to the now, to a city not much recognizable by me anymore, from a city that has disappeared.
